Our mission is to encourage and support the spiritual and musical education of children and to serve the worship and arts communities of West Michigan.

A LETTER FROM OUR ARTISTIC DIRECTOR

October 2015

Because there are those who need to sing...

Because there are those who need to listen...

Your continued partnership helps the Grand Rapids Choir of Men & Boys to be both blessed and a blessing as we feed hearts and minds

Throughout GRCMB’s first quarter century of singing, our main inspiration    has been people’s hunger to be inspired, to be moved, and to feel deeply a sense of being valued by and belonging to this community we call West Michigan.

The Grand Rapids Choir of Men & Boys bears this responsibility by having Grand Rapids in our name. With humble pride we bear it in our hearts and carry it our voices as we live out our mission to serve both the musical and spiritual life of our community.

As I write to you today, GRCMB’s next quarter century has already begun, and we are preparing to once again live our mission. Without inspiration the best powers of the human mind remain dormant. There is a fuel in us that needs to be ignited with sparks. This is why our boys train so hard and each knows, along with the gentlemen, that everyone is responsible to carry his own weight. The sensitivity and quickness with which our boys master this music is amazing. You can do a lot if you are properly trained.

But, the arts aren’t just important because they improve math scores. “The arts are important because they speak to parts of children’s beings which are otherwise untouched.” (Ken Robinson)

Why do people ask to see God’s identity papers when the darkness opening into morning is more than enough?  Mary Oliver

The Grand Rapids Choir of Men & Boys will conclude their 26th Season on May 20, 21 & 22 with a program which will warm, surprise and delight listeners…consider it the perfect spring bouquet of music, poetry, life and joy!

The concert will open with a selection of new sacred pieces to the Choir’s library…Charles Villiers Stanford’s Biblical Songs & Hymns Op 113.  Stanford experimented with novel forms to express religious devotion, and these settings are one of these experiments. The organ accompaniment plants this work firmly in the church, but the songs themselves use "secular" techniques. The texts of the songs were chosen and adapted by Stanford, mostly from the Psalms. These are compositions filled with melodic and harmonic joy which spring from the texts…truly engaging, affecting music.

Following the Stanford pieces, the choir will perform John Rutter’s “For the Beauty of the Earth.” This will allow the choir to then head down a brand new path by performing some of the most beautiful secular part songs ever composed. Nature will be engaged to discover the God of Scripture revealing himself in the beauty of his created world. The choir will revel in the beauties of nature, nurture, home & family in stunning, heart stopping musical settings by Ralph Vaughan Williams, Bob Chilcott, John Rutter, Harold Arlen and more.

You do not want to miss this one…come and bring friends and revel with us.
